Among these actions, he will announce pardons for his supporters convicted for the January 6 Capitol riot, sign measures against immigrants, withdraw from the climate agreement, and curtail transgender rights "in the name of free speech."

In his inaugural address yesterday (Monday) in Washington, Donald Trump described himself as chosen by God to save America and restore its greatness. Immediately after taking the oath, he began signing a tsunami of executive orders. According to reports, he will announce pardons for some of his supporters who were prosecuted for the January 2021 Capitol riot. According to ABC, Trump plans to pardon those prosecuted for non-violent offenses and commute the sentences of Americans convicted of assaulting police officers during the Capitol unrest, allowing those who were imprisoned to walk free.

The number of executive orders Trump intends to sign immediately is expected to range between 100 and 200. Many of these orders aim to reverse decisions made by Joe Biden's administration, which Trump harshly criticized in his speech. He referred to January 20, 2025, as "Liberation Day" for American citizens.

"We now have an administration that cannot solve even simple crises at home while stumbling into a series of catastrophic events overseas. It fails to protect wonderful, law-abiding Americans and provides sanctuary and protection for dangerous criminals, many of whom come from prisons and mental institutions and enter our country illegally from all over the world," Trump said, criticizing the outgoing administration.

Trump’s orders include measures against illegal immigrants, a reversal of much of Biden’s energy and climate policies, restrictions on transgender rights, and the designation of drug cartels as "foreign terrorist organizations."

In his speech, Trump announced his intention to "declare a national emergency at our southern border," enabling him to secure federal funding for building border walls without needing congressional approval. He plans to continue constructing the wall he promised during his first term, only a small portion of which was completed, and to halt refugee admissions.

"We will begin the process of returning millions of foreign criminals back to the places they came from," he pledged in Washington. Since his election, Trump has vowed to carry out a "mass deportation" of immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally. He also plans to deploy troops to the Mexican border, a move that would face immediate legal challenges due to strict U.S. laws regarding the use of military forces within the country. In his speech, he said the troops would be sent to the southern border to "repel the destructive invasion of our nation."

The incoming president also intends to issue an order revoking birthright citizenship for children born in the U.S. to undocumented immigrants. This move clearly violates the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, which grants citizenship to "all persons born or naturalized in the United States." This order is also expected to face a series of legal challenges.

Trump plans to sign an executive order declaring a "national emergency" in the energy sector, which may expedite approvals for building oil pipelines and power plants. He will reverse Biden's restrictions on vehicle emissions and fuel efficiency regulations and open federal lands in Alaska to additional oil and gas drilling. Trump will cancel numerous regulations encouraging the use of electric vehicles, end government support for charging stations, and withdraw, once again, from the Paris Climate Accord, as he did in his first term.

One particularly sensitive decision, sparking controversy, involves restricting transgender rights.

"From now on, the official policy of the United States will recognize only two genders—male and female," Trump declared during his speech. In his campaign, he promised to limit the rights of transgender individuals in the U.S. military and schools.

This policy shift is tied to Trump’s decision to sign an order ending the federal "diversity, equity, and inclusion" program. In his speech, Trump stated, "After years of unlawful federal efforts to restrict free speech, I will sign an executive order immediately halting government censorship and restoring freedom of expression in America." As part of this decision, he declared that the official U.S. policy will recognize only two genders, male and female. Another order will prevent transgender women from participating in women’s sports and prohibit the recruitment of transgender individuals into the military while removing the protections afforded to transgender individuals in prisons.

During his first term, Trump signed an executive order reducing efforts to address racial disparities in the workplace through corporate diversity training programs. Biden reversed this order on his first day in office in January 2021, and Trump is expected to reinstate his original order.

In his speech, Trump also promised to rename the Gulf of Mexico as "America’s Gulf" and reiterated his intention to bring the Panama Canal back under U.S. control, a goal he has repeatedly mentioned in recent weeks. He did not elaborate on how he plans to achieve this objective.

Over the weekend, TikTok went dark across the US after the Supreme Court upheld a law banning the app due to national security concerns over its Chinese ownership by ByteDance. However, the app made a surprise return a day later with a message crediting incoming President Donald Trump for its restoration. Here's what happened and what it means for TikTok's future.

On Friday, the Supreme Court upheld a congressional law banning TikTok, citing concerns over China's potential misuse of ByteDance to collect data from US users. The ban, designed to prevent foreign adversaries from exploiting personal data, was set to take effect on Sunday.

"I would like the United States to have a 50% ownership position in a joint venture. By doing this, we save TikTok, keep it in good hands, and allow it to stay up," Trump stated.

Another potential option could involve the Biden administration's approach of not enforcing the law. This would allow platforms like Apple and Google to continue hosting TikTok without repercussions, though this approach might raise legal and ethical concerns for the tech giants.

ByteDance has previously resisted selling TikTok, but the recent ban may prompt reconsideration. Speculation around potential buyers has intensified, with Elon Musk being floated as a candidate—though TikTok dismissed the claim as unfounded.

Other interested parties include former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, businessman Frank McCourt, and even YouTube star MrBeast, who claimed to have billionaire investors willing to support a bid.

While TikTok resumed operations for existing users, ByteDance’s other apps, such as Lemon8, CapCut, and Marvel Snap, remained inaccessible in the US. Even the developers of Marvel Snap, a ByteDance subsidiary, expressed surprise at the outage, suggesting a lack of prior notice.

TikTok’s uncertain future could significantly benefit competitors like Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and Twitch. Analysts predict that advertisers may redirect their budgets to Meta and Google if TikTok remains unstable. Other platforms, such as Xiaohongshu (RedNote), have also seen growth in the US and UK, positioning themselves as potential alternatives.

As TikTok’s fate hangs in the balance, the app’s brief return highlights ongoing tensions between national security concerns and user demand. Trump’s proposed executive order may offer temporary relief, but the long-term future of TikTok in the US remains unclear.

TikTok announced Sunday that it would resume service in the U.S. after temporarily blocking access the night before. The company credited assurances from President-elect Donald Trump for enabling its service providers to continue supporting the platform.

In a statement posted on X, TikTok explained, "We are working with our service providers to restore operations. We appreciate President Trump's efforts to provide the clarity and assurance needed for our service providers to maintain TikTok's availability for over 170 million Americans and support over 7 million small businesses."

TikTok emphasized its commitment to free expression and promised to collaborate with Trump on a sustainable solution that would secure the app’s presence in the U.S. "This is a strong stand for the First Amendment and against arbitrary censorship," the statement added.

The service disruption came just hours after Trump, in a post on Truth Social, expressed his desire for TikTok to remain operational, particularly to broadcast his inauguration on Monday. He announced plans to issue an executive order extending the timeline for implementing the ban, allowing more time to negotiate a resolution that addresses national security concerns. The order would also shield companies involved in maintaining TikTok’s service during the interim from penalties.

By Sunday afternoon, TikTok’s platform began returning to functionality in stages, starting with web browser access. By evening, the app was accessible for many users, who were greeted with a message celebrating its return: "Welcome back! Thanks for your patience and support. As a result of President Trump's efforts, TikTok is back in the U.S.! You can continue to create, share, and discover all the things you love on TikTok."

Despite the partial restoration, TikTok remained unavailable for download on Apple’s and Google’s app stores.

The law set to ban TikTok, originally scheduled to take effect Sunday, allows a 90-day delay at the president's discretion if certain conditions are met. The legislation, signed by President Joe Biden in April, requires TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to divest ownership to a non-Chinese buyer to avoid the ban.

Both Biden and the incoming Trump administration appeared to have softened their stances on TikTok in the lead-up to the ban. Trump, who had advocated for banning TikTok during his first term, reversed his position during his campaign and pledged to protect the platform’s availability.
